Growing up the dirty secret was your parents shopped at K-Mart. No kid ever wanted anyone else to know they had clothes or stuff from K-Mart. Some kids even went so far as to hide if they saw someone from their school in the store. I guess it wasn't apparent that "hey they were shopping there too." Instead, you just wanted to hide in shame.
Even with all the lurking, hiding and shame it was sort of fun at K-Mart back in the day. You would always look over the aisles just waiting to see where that blue light would go on. Then you would rush right over and see what was on sale. For a young impressionable child you just had to have whatever it was, even though you would never tell anyone it came from K-Mart.
The stigma of shopping at K-Mart prevented me from going back until I was a sound, comfortable and thrifty adult! Yet, it was no longer as fun. I never saw that blue light again. It seemed to disappear; or it was never on when I shopped.
Recently, I noticed a new blue light. This time the light is an actual light bulb character on the new K-Mart holiday commercials. He is so adorable. I'm proud to say that I no longer shop in shame. I proudly shop at K-Mart. The new blue light just makes it fun again!
